Acupuncture: the Solution to Chronic Pain

Friday, July 1st, 2011

chronic painIt is very unfortunate that a lot of chronic pain sufferers are not getting the right treatment. Often times, they are misdiagnosed and are told that there is nothing to worry about or they are put on countless rounds of over the counter or prescribed pain killers … each with its own set of side effects!

Origins of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a very old practice in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has been around for over 3,000 years and has gained respect and popularity all over the world. It is based on the metaphysical doctrine that the body is made healthy by an unseen life force or energy called chi. Probably one of the most sought after alternative medicines, TCM and acupuncture has made it possible for many people to live normal lives at a cheaper price and lesser risk.

Current Problems of Chronic Pain

In 2010, an online survey was held in Canada and it was found out that 53% of chronic pain sufferers feel that that there is insufficient support available. Most of the respondents even claim that the instructions that their doctors provide them do not help at all. To top that, chronic pain sufferers are getting conflicting information from one doctor to another. This makes it impossible for chronic pain sufferers to decide what to do to improve their condition.

Another problem that chronic pain sufferers have to deal with is the wait time. Many of them do not really see a specialist without waiting six months or longer. As a result, they rely on non-addictive drugs just to be able to manage pain. It is  very frustrating for people to realize that the solutions they are offered do not deliver the results they were expecting.

Chronic Pain and Acupuncture

If you do not address your chronic pain issues quickly, it will lead to an escalating series of problems which will increase the pain you suffer. For example, many chronic pain sufferers cannot sleep … over time, the lack of sleep will increase the levels of pain you experience. Over the counter drugs have side effects which include stomach acidity and upsets. Again, this results in even more suffering and distress.

Acupuncture can help in ways you cannot imagine. The thousands of years that acupuncture has been used to treat pain and chronic pain are a testament to its effectiveness.

Acupuncture consists of inserting very tiny, thin needles in several points of the body where the energy flows. This energy, called chi, should  flow freely throughout the entire body. When chi is not flowing freely you will get illnesses, and pain.  The blocked movement of chi can affect you both mentally and physically.  Acupuncture restores the flow of chi energy in the body, removing blockages or redirecting the energy to its natural course.

Of course alleviating the pain is only one aspect of an acupuncture treatment. Pain is a symptom that something else is wrong … and finding that “something” and treating it, is the second aspect of an acupuncture treatment.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture are accepted worldwide due to the amazing number of illnesses it can positively treat.  Acupuncture can provide immediate relief to physical pain. There are no side effects to worry about.

Acupuncture and Fibromyalgia – Relieving Pain Naturally

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Acupuncture for FibromyalgiaA medical condition characterized by a whole body pain together with fatigue, memory, mood and sleep disorders is known as fibromyalgia. Medical experts say that fibromyalgia can increase the pain sensation felt by interrupting the process of how your brain interprets the pain signals.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia commonly start after undergoing a surgery, infection, significant psychological stress or physical trauma. There also other cases wherein the symptoms can build up over time even though there’s no definite stimulating factor. Fibromyalgia is a condition that commonly affects women more than men.

Tension headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder), anxiety and depression are also some of the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. Today, there is still no cure for fibromyalgia. Many doctors treat the pain with medication, but even that can have little affect. Alternative therapies include exercise, relaxation, massage, and acupuncture.

Acupuncture and Fibromyalgia

There had been several studies done to determine the relationship between acupuncture and fibromyalgia. A recent Mayo Clinic test shows that acupuncture can be effective in reducing the symptoms caused by fibromyalgia such as stiffed joints, chronic pain and sleep disturbance. Acupuncture not only brings significant pain relief but it can also lower symptoms such as fatigue and anxiety.

Treatment is equally effective using needles or an acupuncture laser. Endorphins are released into the bloodstream by just gently twisting or manipulating the needles. These endorphins that were released are considered as the natural pain killer of the body. Aside from this, energy blocks can also cause pain. The flow of energy can be restored along the energy channels by removing these blocks.

The brain chemistry according to research can be altered by acupuncture thus relieving pain. The release of neurotransmitters is changed by this procedure. The nerve impulses in the brain can be stimulated or inhibited by these neurotransmitters. Sensations like pain and information about the external stimuli are relayed through nerve impulses. The patient’s pain threshold is increased in this way. Most patients who undergo a series of treatments report that the pain they felt were relieved for several weeks after the procedures.

Acupuncture is a holistic therapy that can make a big impact on your total well-being. In this way, it will let you lower your need for medications and help you go back to your normal daily activities.

Managing Pain With Ear Acupuncture

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Ear acupuncture is also know as auricular acupuncture or as Auriculotherapy.

Acupuncture Pain Treatments

There are innumerable disorders which have the common symptom of pain. You may suffer from musculoskeletal ailments, headaches, pain from diseases and pain of any kind in any part of the body.

While pain killers help in the short term, they are not an alternative for long term chronic pain conditions. Pain killers often have their own side effects which many people want to avoid.

Auricular acupuncture or ear acupuncture is an alternative remedy, which is used for alleviating pain of various kinds and even chronic conditions. The outer ear has points which reflect various parts of the body. When the correct points are stimulated by acupuncture, the pain in that area will recede. This helps in normalizing dysfunctions in the body.

How does auricular acupuncture work?

A somatotopic map, which represents an inverted fetus, shows the points corresponding to parts of the whole human body in the outer ear. This map was created by Dr. Paul Nogier in the 1950s in Lyon, France, detailing 100 acupuncture points in the outer ear. He later came to be regarded even by the Chinese as the father of modern ear acupuncture. However, the Chinese have been using auricular acupuncture for thousands of years before this. Currently the map Dr. Nogier created and the original Chinese map are used together.

When the right reflex points are stimulated with needles, you will feel the pricking sensation. You will then experience pain relief in the original pain areas as well as any referred pain you may have. As you continue acupuncture sessions the periods of remission from pain will increase till you eventually get complete relief from pain.

The kinds of stimulation used:

Usually the acupuncturist will insert four to six needles which are left in place for about 20 minutes. An alternative to needles is Laser Acupuncture.  The same therapy points are used … and you may notice a slight heating sensation.

It is not necessary that an acupuncturist needs to use needles. At times low powered lasers, or even seeds and pellets taped on the pressure point can afford the same benefits as needles.

Acupuncture is not a panacea for all ills. If you suffer from any painful condition, it is important to get a proper diagnosis and go through all the tests and investigations required. Some serious conditions are best left to conventional treatments. However, when you have a painful condition you should try acupuncture as a therapeutic treatment and for its complementary medical value.

Scientific research studies have shown the ear acupuncture affords pain relief in as many as 75 percent of the patients studied, so it is not some irrational or unproven treatment program. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine have been practices for thousands of years!

I have had extraordinary results on patients with both temporary pain and debilitating arthritic conditions. Give me a call to discuss your pain issues!  604-839-9789

Acupuncture to Relieve Pain During Natural Childbirth

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

If you choose not to use conventional drugs for pain relief, because drugs have an impact on you and your baby, a great alternative is Acupuncture.  Chinese women have been using Acupuncture for thousands of years to experience pain-free child birth.

Acupuncture and Natural Childbirth

How Acupuncture helps during labor:

Acupuncture is a safe and efficacious method of relieving pain during labor and delivery. It has been used for thousands of years in China and other eastern countries with good results. Acupuncture is used on specific points in the body which will afford pain relief during labor and delivery so that the baby’s birth is relatively pain free. The mother has no side effects from conventional drugs and is awake and responsive during labor and the baby, too, is not affected by anesthesia or other pain relief drugs.

Acupuncture makes labor shorter and easier. It does so by hastening the cervix dilatation; you will experience regular contractions without the accompanying pain and be able to manage your labor better. Along with relaxing and breathing techniques, Acupuncture can help make labor and delivery more natural and pain free.

How Acupuncture works during childbirth:

Acupuncture works on the Chinese Medicine theory which divides the body into 14 meridians. Using specific Acupuncture points on these meridians can reduce the pain a great deal. Targeting these points help by putting the body’s qi (energy) into balance and inducing the body to work more efficiently. The pain relief occurs due to the release of endorphins by the brain.

Acupuncture should be done by a licensed practitioner who is familiar with the procedures of child birth.  Though small, hair thin needles have been used in the past, we now offer laser acupuncture. At the beginning of each contraction the Acupuncturist targets certain points on the body until pain relief is achieved.

In addition to Acupuncture it is important that the birthing mother is relaxed. Tension and fear of childbirth often causes the muscles to tense and contract making the child birth contractions more painful. Natural breathing techniques help the relaxation process.

It is important to start using Acupuncture as soon as labor starts for the greatest benefits.

If you are interested in using Acupuncture during child birth, please give me a call for a consultation.  604-839-9789

Are You Trapped in A Cycle of Pain?

Monday, March 14th, 2011

In today’s hectic lifestyle, we don’t take adequate time to heal. We resort to painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications to dull the aches and pains and reduce inflammation.  Drugs are quick and easy, albeit temporary.

Cycle of Pain and Acupuncture

I have a new technique that is proving to be effective and long lasting with  very quick results. Whether the pain is  chronic or acute, the treatment is the same.  Usually fewer than 6 appointments are needed and each appointment is only 20-30 minutes.  There are no drugs involved.  I simply work with your body and help it heal and repair and renew.

It’s more than just pain … it’s full range of movement without pain.  I have had men touching their toes when they have never touched their toes in their whole life.

I find it fascinating to blend the “ancient” world of acupuncture with today’s “modern” knowledge of the body.  Thousands of years ago, they didn’t have microscopes so their insight to the body was very limited.  To incorporate today’s knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and neurology with ancient applications that have a modern twist and purpose is effective.

The ancient philosophy of TCM in treating pain is to move the energy (Qi) through the obstacles that create the blockages.   The flow of Qi can be disrupted by physical trauma, sprains, strains, over-exertion, repetitive injury, emotional stress, etc.  Keeping this purpose in mind, applying new information about the body structures and how they work gives us the same simple approach with even better results.

The beauty of acupuncture is its simplicity. By simply moving the energy within the body, many ailments can be eliminated … like PAIN.  The reason Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), that is thousands of years old, is still effective today is because  the human body has not really changed or evolved.  We are the same beast today as we were thousands of years ago.  (better teeth and less body hair)

Maintaining the basic TCM principles, I use a new technique called Auricular Medicine to create an even more effective healing plan. This new approach to dealing with pain has high success ratings.  Auricular Medicine comes to us from Germany where most Orthopedic surgeons begin treatment using auricular medicine and have been doing so for many years.

IF you impose an image of a human fetus over the ear, it matches beautifully.  We follow the map laid out by the fetus to find the injuries or obstacles that create the pain.

When you combine the Auricular Medicine with Laser Acupuncture, needles aren’t even needed. But the level of success remains the same.  My patients have a choice of treatments:  the traditional needles or needle-less acupuncture (laser).

You DO NOT have to live in a state of constant PAIN. You owe it to yourself, your health and wellbeing to give Acupuncture a try.  I have dozens of happy patients whose range of movement has increased dramatically and who are in less pain that they ever dreamed was possible.  You could be one of them!
