Humans have been spending hours in the sun on a daily basis for millions of years. With reports that exposure to the sun increases the likelihood of developing skin cancer, however, more and more people are reluctant to allow the sun to reach their skin. What they do not realize is that they are missing out on the countless health benefits that the sun provides.
The body is able to produce vitamin D when it is exposed to sunlight. This prehormone is transformed into calcitriol, which is a steroid hormone that controls 10% of the genes in the human body. If a human body has vitamin D deficiency, it cannot produce calcitriol, increasing likelihood of autism, heart attacks, arthritis and not surprisingly, even cancer.
Vitamin D, in small doses, actually has the ability to break down mutated cancerous cells in the human body. Not only does it try to regulate these deadly cells, but it also provides a natural means for destroying them. Little or no exposure to the sun allows these cells to flourish freely.
The sun also plays a vital role in developing and maintaining the human immune system. Vitamin D is able to help the body fight off various illnesses better than artificial drugs. Deficiency of vitamin D, more common in the winter when sunlight exposure is less than in other seasons, is a reason why illnesses are more frequent in the winter.
This Spring … get out into the sunshine. Sunbath for 15 – 20 minutes with your face up into the sun. Don’t put on sun block … just soak in the rays. Don’t overdo it. 20 minutes MAX … then put on a hat and some covering and sunblock IF necessary.
