Want to figure out your target heart rate so you know how hard you are working and if you are working in the ZONE?
This is a simple formula that has not changed in over 4 decades:
220 – your age = maximum heart rate
How high should you go? The high you should aim for during your workouts is 85%
Maximum heart rate x .85 = workout high
These are estimates and may need to be adjusted as you begin an exercise program, slowly increasing them as you progress.
How to determine approximate heart rates without a heart rate monitor:
below 70% – you can sing a song
70% – you can talk
80% – you can only speak in 2-3 word sentences
85% or higher – grunts only
